Choosing the Right Retirement Community

Have you ever wished that you had done something sooner rather than later? More often than not, people will tell us, if they had known what their live would be like, they would have moved into a retirement community five years sooner.

Making the decision to move to a senior living community doesn't have to be difficult. The range of services can vary widely among communities, but all of them provide one or more of the following:

Senior/Residential Living

Single family homes and apartments that feature a worry-free retirement without the hassles of home ownership.

Personal Care/Assisted Living

An option for those who value their independence, but need some assistance with daily living to maintain that independence.

Nursing & Rehabilitative Care

Around-the-clock nursing, restorative nursing care or rehabilitative services.

When you make the decision to learn more about a retirement community, there are several important factors to consider.

FROM THE MODEST TO HIGHEST END OFFERS

Although some retirement communities have one financial offer, check to see if varieties are available. Affordability and options vary from place to place based on the market and community's history.

Costs will rise from modest to high-end when consumers consider a community that is more inclusive in terms of amenities and physical space.

Included services vary widely

While man seniors are attracted to the full continuum of care, others find what they need in freestanding facilities that simply provide personal care and skilled nursing services.

Prior to making a decision

When you approach the decision to select the right retirement community, you want to take the same steps you would with any major life decision:

  • - Be sure to visit the communities you're considering.
  • - Talk to residents while you're touring the campus, be sure to strike up a conversation with some of the residents. This is the best way to learn what to expect.
  • - Check out the personal care and nursing facilities
  • - Review the contract.

No matter what type of residential option you consider, it is important to make sure you understand exactly what the contract covers. Is medical care provided? What services are provided in the monthly fee? Is the entry fee refundable?

REMEMBER... CHOOSING A RETIREMENT COMMUNITY IS NOT SOMETHING TO BE RUSHED. Take time to think about your lifestyle and your present and future needs. Investigate the options, ask questions, and you'll be equipped with the knowledge to make your decision and the move to the right retirement environment for you.
